Furnace Repair and Troubleshooting

No one wants to wake up to a cold house in the middle of winter due to their furnace calling it quits. Today’s furnaces and heat pumps are quite reliable, but require maintenance to perform in tip-top shape. Every once in a while furnace repair is necessary. There are a few things you can double check before calling an HVAC company for repair to troubleshoot your furnace.

Troubleshoot before calling for Repair

The best place to start if your furnace isn’t working is to make sure the power to it is turned on. This may sound obvious, but usually furnace power switches are in a low or hidden area inside the HVAC closet and can get turned off by something falling or shifting in the closet. Save the hassle and expense of a service call by checking this first. Be sure that your thermostat is turned on to the heat function and the temperature set above room temp. It’s possible a family member turned it off and/or forgot to turn it back on.

Checking your breaker box should be the next step. If you power to the furnace has been tripped, a quick flip of the switch might bring the heat back. Next, if your furnace is gas, check that the gas valve is on and that the pilot light is lit.… Read More

Carbon Monoxide – Symptoms, Detection and Prevention

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is known as the silent killer. It’s an odorless gas that is impossible to detect and can cause flu-like symptoms or even death. This may sound like the next blockbuster horror movie in theaters, but unfortunately it  is a reality. There are ways to protect yourself and your family from CO poisoning.  Read on to learn more about Carbon Monoxide and how to guard against it.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

CO is a gas that is produced during combustion when fuel is burned. You can find Carbon Monoxide  in the fumes of car exhausts, stoves, grills, lanterns, fireplaces, furnaces and so much more. When equipment is outdoors or adequately ventilated, CO naturally dissipates, causing no harm. Carbon Monoxide can build up to toxic levels in enclosed areas, and the damage can be fatal. Nearly 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning each year. More than 20,000 emergency room visits and 4000 hospital stays are annually attributed to this deadly gas.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms

Identifying the onset of symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning can save a life. Often confused with the flu, common CO poisoning symptoms can include headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting and chest pain. More significant amounts of CO can cause confusion and unconsciousness. The very young and the elderly are more susceptible. CO poisoning while sleeping can be fatal.… Read More
